Choosing a Travel Router: What Actually Matters
Hotel and airport Wi-Fi has a bad reputation for good reason: it's a shared, often poorly secured network that you have no control over. A travel router doesn't fix the hotel's network, but it changes your relationship to it — instead of every device connecting directly to an unknown network, only the travel router does, and everything else connects to it.
The core idea
Think of a travel router as a small, personal network you carry with you. It connects to whatever Wi-Fi or wired connection is available — a hotel network, an Ethernet port, a mobile hotspot — and then creates its own private Wi-Fi network for your phone, laptop, and tablet to join instead.
Why that matters for security
Most travel routers built for this purpose support VPN protocols like WireGuard or OpenVPN directly on the device. That means your VPN connection covers every device joining the travel router's network automatically, instead of having to install and manage a VPN app separately on each device.
What to look for
- VPN client support built into the firmware, not just VPN-passthrough, which is a weaker feature that some routers advertise misleadingly.
- USB-C power, so you can charge it from the same charger and battery pack as your phone.
- A companion app or simple web dashboard, since you may be configuring it in an unfamiliar place with limited time.
- Repeater/access-point mode, so it can connect to existing Wi-Fi as well as wired connections.
Who actually benefits most
Frequent travelers, remote workers who connect from co-working spaces and cafes, and anyone handling sensitive work data on the road get the clearest benefit. If you mostly connect from home and rarely use public Wi-Fi, a travel router is a smaller priority than it is for someone living out of hotel rooms and airport lounges.
