SSD vs Portable Hard Drive: Which One Should You Buy?
For years the advice was simple: buy a hard drive if you need cheap storage, and an SSD if you need speed. That advice is outdated for most people buying a portable drive today, and it's worth understanding why before you spend money on the wrong one.
What actually changed
Portable SSD prices per gigabyte have fallen enough that, for the 1TB-2TB range most people actually buy, the price gap between a portable hard drive and a portable SSD is often smaller than people expect. Once that gap narrows, the trade-offs stop being about price and start being about durability and speed.
Durability is the real advantage
A traditional hard drive stores data on a spinning platter read by a moving mechanical arm. Drop it while it's running, or even while it's idle in a bag that gets knocked around, and there's a real chance of physical damage. An SSD has no moving parts, so it tolerates the bumps of daily travel — in a backpack, a camera bag, a car — far better.
Speed matters more than people think
If you edit video, back up large photo libraries, or move big game installs around, SSD speeds aren't just a "nice to have." Reading directly from a slow drive can make video editing software stutter or force you to copy files locally first, which defeats the point of a portable drive.
When a hard drive still makes sense
If you need very large capacity for a fixed archive — for example, a backup drive that sits on a shelf and rarely moves — a hard drive can still offer more storage per dollar at the high end of the capacity range. For anything that travels with you regularly, though, the durability of an SSD is usually worth the difference.
What to check before buying
Look at the connection type (USB-C with USB 3.2 Gen 2 is the current sweet spot for speed), any ingress protection rating if you'll use it outdoors, and whether the drive needs external power or draws it directly from the USB cable — most portable SSDs today are self-powered, which matters if you're using it with a phone or tablet.
