Every new router seems to advertise Wi-Fi 6 these days, usually next to a big speed number that doesn't mean much on its own. The real story of Wi-Fi 6 isn't top speed — it's how a network behaves once more than a couple of devices are using it at the same time.
The problem Wi-Fi 6 actually solves
Older Wi-Fi standards handle devices one at a time, in quick turns. That works fine with two or three devices, but a typical household today might have fifteen or twenty things connected — phones, laptops, a smart TV, a couple of streaming boxes, smart bulbs, a video doorbell, a game console. Every one of those devices takes its turn, even if it only needs to send a tiny amount of data.
Wi-Fi 6 introduces a technique called OFDMA, which lets the router talk to multiple devices in the same transmission window instead of strictly one at a time. Combined with improved MU-MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output), the practical effect is a network that stays responsive as more devices join, rather than slowing down device by device.
Where you'll actually notice the difference

- Battery life — Wi-Fi 6 includes Target Wake Time, which lets devices sleep more efficiently between check-ins, extending battery life on phones and IoT gadgets.
Where it won't matter much
If you live alone with two or three devices, an older dual-band router will feel just as fast day to day. Wi-Fi 6's advantages scale with the number of connected devices, not with how fast your internet plan is — a slow internet connection stays slow regardless of the Wi-Fi standard powering it.
What to look for when buying
WPA3 support is worth prioritizing alongside Wi-Fi 6 itself, since it's a meaningful step up in wireless security over the older WPA2 standard. Beyond that, a router with a companion app you find genuinely usable will save more day-to-day frustration than an extra few hundred megabits of theoretical top speed you'll rarely reach in practice.
